Languages
Tidal PTC uses one list of languages (app/Enums/Language.php) for two separate things: the language each user reads the interface in, and the languages a school offers translators for at conferences. This page covers both.
Supported languages
Section titled “Supported languages”| Language | Code | Shown in the language menu as | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | en |
English | Left to right |
| Chinese (Mandarin) | zh-CN |
简体中文 | Left to right |
| Japanese | ja |
日本語 | Left to right |
| Korean | ko |
한국어 | Left to right |
| Spanish | es |
Español | Left to right |
| Arabic | ar |
العربية | Right to left |
English is the source language and the default: new users start in English, and signed-out pages are in English. Every other language has a full translation file in lang/<code>.json. The Chinese translation is Simplified Chinese.
Interface language
Section titled “Interface language”Each user picks their own interface language. It is stored on the user, not the school or district.
- Change it from the Language menu in the sidebar (each language is listed by its native name), or from Language in Personal settings.
- The page reloads in the new language.
- Email notifications are sent in the recipient’s language.
- When Arabic is selected the whole interface switches to right-to-left layout.
See Language and timezone for the guardian walkthrough.
Translator languages
Section titled “Translator languages”Translator languages are configured per school, under Translator settings in School settings, and are independent of anyone’s interface language. Any language from the table above can be added. For each one you set:
| Setting | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Language | The language translators are offered for. Each language can be added once per school. |
| Maximum requests | The most active translator requests for this language across the school. 0 or empty means no limit. |
| Maximum overlaps | The most translator requests for this language that can overlap in time. 0 or empty means no limit. |
When booking, a guardian can only request a translator in a language the school has added. If a limit is reached, the booking is rejected with “No more translator requests are available for this language.” or “No translator is available for this language at that time.” See Requesting a translator and Translators.
